The American Council on Alcoholism began as the Maryland Society on Alcoholism on November 15, 1953. It's mission was to provide a forum for addressing the complex issues of alcohol dependence and to promote treatment options. In recognition of the need for a nationwide council to provide information for alcohol dependent individuals, their families and friends, treatment professionals and the general public, on March 22, 1976, the Maryland Society on Alcoholism became the American Council on Alcoholism.

There is a quiet revolution taking place in the United States in the treatment of alcohol dependence. Medical and scientific research is pinpointing the causes of alcohol dependence and more importantly, offering effective treatment options. The purpose of the American Council on Alcoholism is to be a major voice in terms of educating alcohol dependent individuals, treatment professionals and the general public about the newest developments in treatment, which offer so much hope for so many who previously had none. We believe that there are many approaches to the treatment of alcohol dependence. Further, that individuals should understand what their treatment options are, and then choose which one they feel is most appropriate for them.
